AIA PECONIC SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
We are very pleased and honored to have provided a program which was the focus of our summer schedule. We held this event on the grounds at the Southampton Historical Museum and Research Center on Thursday August 11.
Guests for the evening included the 2011 AIA Peconic Scholarship winners representing area high schools (Ross School, Eastport-South Manor CHSD and Southampton High School) and national colleges and universities (Tulane University School of Architecture, Roger Williams University, Philadelphia University, University of Notre Dame and Laguna College of Art and Design).
These 2011 AIA Peconic Scholarships were made possible, in part, with a grant provided to AIA Peconic from AIA Component Matching Grant Program.
Architects share an important responsibility in assuring the health, safety and welfare of the communities they serve. The American Institute of Architects is committed to contributing to the preparation of graduates who will meet the current and future challenges in a swiftly evolving profession. The AIA believes that the investment to support the education of future professionals is a crucial part of its mission.
Miles Kozatch from The Ross School, Scott Rose from Southampton High School, Faith Tuttle from Eastport-South Manor CHSD, Alexander Morris from The Ross School and Alyxandra Tortorice from Southampton High School all received awards from AIA Peconic.
Along with the students and their parents, NYS AIA President David Businelli, AIA and the membership of AIA Peconic spent a wonderful summer evening having a country picnic at the Southampton Historical Museum and Research Center.

Code Hurricane Rules Opposed . . .
The AIA Peconic's Code Committee has drafted several position papers suggesting critical changes to the existing New York State Building Code standards for hurricane protection.
The Committee has proposed changes in the Residential Building Code in the requirements therein for opening (window) protection, the wind zone, wind engineering methods, site built fixed windows and essential wood framing.
These modifications were outlined in the letter the Chapter's Code Committee sent to the State Department's Code Division in July of 2008, and have been followed up in 2009 with Letters and News Releases to the local news media on each subject that have been copied as well to State legislators and representatives, the State Code Division, County officials, and local Building Inspectors and Fire Marshals.
To read copies of these letters click below:

Position Paper No. 1: GET RID OF WINDOW PROTECTION WHICH PROTECTS PROPERTY, NOT PEOPLE.
News Release No. 1: AIA-PECONIC OBJECTS TO CODE-MANDATED WINDOW PROTECTION
Position Paper No. 2: CHANGE THE WIND ZONE TO THE UNPROTECTED COASTAL FIRST HALF-MILE
News Release No. 2: AIA-PECONIC CALLS FOR REDUCING THE WIND ZONE DESIGNATION
Position Paper No. 3: PARTIALLY ENCLOSED DESIGNS PROTECT THE PUBLIC WITHOUT COMPROMISING SAFETY
News Release No. 3: AIA-PECONIC COMMENDS STATE FOR KEEPING WINDOWLESS DESIGN METHOD IN THE CODE
Position Paper No. 4: ALLOW FIXED WINDOWS TO BE BUILT ON SITE AS WELL AS IN A FACTORY
News Release No. 4: AIA-PECONIC SAYS FIXED SITE-BUILT WINDOWS BELONG IN THE CODE
Position Paper No. 5: PUT PRESCRIPTIVE STANDARDS FOR WOOD FRAMING DIRECTLY IN THE CODE

News
The tremendous success of two day "The Duck Project Charrette" was a testimony to a cross-section of architects, engineers, planners, biologist and concerned citizens who gathers together at Stony Brook Southampton to discuss the future of 500 pristine acres of wetlands and forest on Peconic Bay. "The land, which abuts some 5,000 acres of the fragile pine barrens is vitally important to the entire region as it covers East End aquifers - the source of drinking water"as noted by Brian Bossetta in his recent article in The Southampton Press.
